Diary of a Fired DJ - A Real Radio Unemployment Story

Days #106 - 1/28/98

Hurry up and wait...

Well, today I officially applied for unemployment. My severance ran out with my last check and the time of truth had come. I've only applied for unemployment once before when I was between jobs after working in Chicago. It wasn't as bad applying here in Richmond as it was in Chicago. The Chicago unemployment office I went to was a ZOO. A slow zoo. A terminal zoo. Today, it only took me about 2 hours to fill out the paperwork and speak with an "interviewer". Still though, a painfully boring and tedious process. I wasn't looking forward to it....but I'm glad that initial part is over. If all goes without a hitch, I'll start receiving some checks in a couple of weeks.

I'm one of those people who doesn't relish the idea of collecting unemployment. Actually, when I applied for it after the Chicago job, I waited a few months before doing so. And then, I only received one check before getting a job offer in St. Louis. It's certainly good to know there's some financial relief available , but I'm one of those stupidly proud folks who would rather fend for myself. I don't want a handout. It's the way I was brought up. But, I have my family to think about.

By the way, the reason I haven't update the diary for a couple of days is because I was really focused on this Windows game I developed about the Clinton sex scandal. It's pretty funny.....it's called "Sex Lies & Audiotape".
