Diary of a Fired DJ - A Real Radio Unemployment Story

.Days #111 - 2/2/98

When you sign up with the state unemployment agency, it's sort of an agreement:

"We'll send you money each week, but you have to fill out a lot of paperwork so we can use the expensive computers your tax dollars bought us to try and match you up with a job you most likely won't take."

Deal.

I haven't even got my first check yet but I've already received a notice from their "automated matching system". (Doesn't that sound personal?) It's not a radio job, it's an opportunity in 1 of several "related" fields (advertising/public relations) I checked off when I applied for my unemployment. If I don't respond one way or another to this notice, THEY CUT OFF ALL MY BENEFITS! EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT EVEN RECEIVING ANY! wait a second....it sez that here because this is a form letter.

Oh.

Today is Ground Hog Day. Now how do you get a stable job like that? National adulation, recognition, good accomodations and you work one-day-a-year!
