Diary of a Fired DJ - A Real Radio Unemployment Story

Day #26 - 11/10/97 - 3:23PM

When you're a career broadcaster...and you're unemployed, you can't stop doing bits in your head. You watch the news and all these ideas keep coming to mind. Let's face it: you miss being on the air! When you do it everyday, year-in and year-out, it's a little difficult to just turn it off. Take for instance what happened this morning at the breakfast table with my wife and kids....

Corey: It's 7:10 with Corey, his wife and kids. Partly Sunny today, High 62. It's a chilly 47.

Wife: You want something to eat?

Corey: Speaking of breakfast, don't forget the cheerleaders at Patrick Henry High are holding a Pancake breakfast Saturday to raise money to buy new uniforms. So, if you can, stop by and support them.

(long pause as everyone just stares at me)

Eric: Dad?

Corey: Is the caller there?

Eric: Dad: I'm sitting next to you.

Corey: Hi, what can I do for you?

Eric: I need lunch money.

Corey: Ya know, we give away THE MOST free lunch money of anyone in Richmond! You're chance is coming soon....

Eric: I need it now. I'm leaving for school.

Wife: COREY!!

Corey: Is the caller there?

Wife: STOP IT! YOU'RE NOT ON-THE-AIR. YOU'RE HAVING BREAKFAST WITH YOUR FAMILY.

Corey: Huh? Wait a second....I don't even think you people are in the demo I'm trying to reach!
