Diary of a Fired DJ - A Real Radio Unemployment Story

Day #34 - 11/18/97 - 6:12PM

Trying to find the right radio job (or any job) is like being a door-to-door salesman. Even if you have GREAT product (you!) , your product (you!) may not be what the guy on the other side of the door needs.

So, you send out tapes and resumes and you wait.

The phone doesn't ring.Telephone

(Except maybe another long-distance company Boy, if I only had a dime-a-minute for every minute of my time Sprint has wasted this year!)

This is the worst part.

No matter what kind of radio show you do, the key is always finding ONE consultant or Program Director who just loves you and your sense of humor. Style, delivery and outlook can be very unique to a Radio Personality or team. Not everyone is going to like what you do. Your act is not going to fit at every Radio Station you send a tape to, especially if you do mornings.

That's why you keep sending out tapes and more tapes. The more you send, the better your chances of meeting up with that ONE person who thinks you're the greatest.

I've been out of work for 34 days now.....longest stretch in about 9 years. I'd like to think I learned a lot about this kind of situation from that last time I was on the beach:

1) Enjoy the down time.

2) Keep confident.

3) Don't freak.

4) Never run out of crackers and cheese whiz during Jerry Springer.
