Day #60 - 12/13/97 - 1150PM
Today marks my 60-day milestone for unemployment. I think the longest I was ever unemployed was when I lost my job in Chicago. Then, I think it was about 3 months before the St. Louis thing came along. Speaking of St. Louis.....I just got an email from Kevin McCarthy. Kevin and I worked together at KLOU-FM back in 1989-1990. He was one of those guys who could walk into the studio with 20 seconds left on a song, slap a couple of things in a cart machine, throw his headphones on and do a 4-hour show without missing a beat.
I also got an email from Tom Hoof, who I mentioned a few entries back. I met Tom when I first went to Q94. He was the "tape cutter" on the morning show. Let me explain this. I was hired by then morning man and PD, Jeff Morgan to be a sidekick. Tommy (we called him Tommy then) had one job: when we would tape a call, Jeff would tell Tommy where to splice it or how to chop it or whatever. I don't even think the phrase "tape cutter" exists today. As a matter of fact, I had never heard of one until I went to Q94. Anyway, Jeff Morgan got fired a couple of months after he hired me (maybe because he kept hiring people to cut his tape) and I moved into the anchor position of the Q94 QZOO. Tommy rose from measily "tape cutter" to measily promotion department lackey and eventually Tommy became so good at being a promotion lackey, he landed a gig at a station in Orlando where he became SO WELL RESPECTED Disney World hired him to be one of the Mouse's Promotion people. Needless to say, Tommy is now some sort of Disney-Stepford Promotion Person, if you know what I mean. No, the Disney way hasn't eaten his brain yet, but better not call Mickey a rat, if you know what I mean cause Tommy will make sure you NEVER FIND YOUR WAY OUT OF EPCOT. EVER.
Oh Tommy.....we hardly knew ya......
