Diary of a Fired DJ - A Real Radio Unemployment Story

Day #91 - 1/13/98 - 10:30pm

I think when this is all said and done, we have to have an online party. I've met so many great folks doing this diary. So many of you have sent warm greetings, words of encouragement, sincere thoughts, kind feelings. How do I ever tell you how much it's meant to me? You'll never know.....

Tonight, we were watching the Drew Carey Show and my wife ask me if I missed Cleveland.

"Of course," I replied. "When you do a radio show you have to totally invest yourself in the community. How could I NOT miss Cleveland?"

We radio people are a funny lot. We pick up, move and take on new hometowns with very little resistance. The key is going on the air and not mispronouncing the obvious, and knowing enough of the local slang to blend in. One of the first things I do when I take on a new job is buy one or two history books about the city and read them. Nothing makes you sound more like a local when you can cite a juicy moment in history at just the perfect time.

Yes, I miss Cleveland very much. I miss Chicago, too. I miss Columbus and Toledo and St. Louis. I miss all the wonderful markets I invested myself in as a radio pro and member of the community. It's hard putting roots down and pulling them back up.
