Training Horses and Molding Young Minds:  'Never Resort to Violence'

Monty Roberts, a world-renowned horse trainer and international best-selling author, is best known as 'The Man Who Listens to Horses,' the title of his best selling autobiography published in 1996 with over 3 million copies sold. He is also known as 'The Horse Whisperer,' made famous by the Robert Redford film and Nicholas Evans book. Roberts was born in California in 1935. He has spent his whole life working with horses - schooling them, listening to them, and learning their equine language. The essence of his training techniques is non-violence. Rather than break his horses he "gentles" them. With over 1500 demonstrations of his "gentling" techniques performed on 6,000 horses in 22 countries, Monty's message, "Violence is never the answer," is being listened to as never before.

The lessons he has learned from horses apparently apply to people, too. Roberts methods were recently adopted by British educators to help troubled kids. The British newspaper The Observer recently reported that Monty Roberts, held a three-day workshop for Global Education Management Systems, one of the biggest operators of independent schools in Britain.

"Horses and children are almost identical emotionally and psychologically," Roberts told the newspaper. "They are both flight animals who wish to avoid trouble, but will become first bashful, then aggressive, if intimidated." Roberts has lots of experience with children. He and his wife Pat raised their own family of three, and over the years Pat and Monty took in 47 foster children.

Perhaps Roberts' empathy for both children and horses stems from his own abused childhood. Roberts' latest book is The Horses in My Life, in which he celebrates his best-loved horses, will be published in the U.S. in September 2005, (Trafalgar Publishing, $29.95). In the book, Roberts recalls that his father was cruel to him both physically and verbally. He escaped that cruelty by running to the first horse in his life, Ginger, often sleeping in the stall with Ginger at night instead of his own bed. He loved Ginger as much as any child has ever loved his first horse says Roberts. "I invite the reader to get to know the horses in my life and to share with me the joy that I found with them," says Roberts of his latest literary effort.

From that difficult childhood, Roberts went on to great success as a horse behaviorist and author. In his early years, he won many competitions, and served as a stunt double for Mickey Rooney, Roddy McDowall, and Charlton Heston. He even pasted black curls under his riding cap while doubling for Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet. In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II invited Monty to Windsor Castle to demonstrate his gentle training method Join~Up and teach her staff. In 1996, The Man Who Listens to Horses, his autobiography, was published and the book remained on New York Times best-seller list for 58 weeks.

In September 2005, Roberts will be appearing at both equine events and book signings of The Horses in My Life in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky, Denver, Colorado, Leesburg, California, and more. For further information, visit www.montyroberts.com
