Tax Tips for Radio Folks - Part 3
Home Office Deduction
If the station you work for doesn't provide you with an office to prepare for your radio show, you can usually take a deduction for an office in your home. If you do this, you can deduct things like:
1. Office supplies
2. Office furniture
3. The portion of your utility bills that applies to your office like the phone, electricity, etc.
A Home
If you're looking for one of the greatest deductions ever allowed, buy a home. I know, I know....you just got there, the neighborhood kids are stoning you when you leave for work in the morning, the wife still wants to live in an apartment, etc. Stop being so damn insecure and buy a home so you have a nice place to live.....and a nice deduction to help you save some money. A lot of radio folks think they shouldn't buy a home because they're afraid of job security. It will pay for itself in tax savings and lifestyle earnings!
Job Hunting
If you spend money searching for a job in your field, you are entitled to deduct certain expenses. For instance:
The cost of postage, Fed Ex charges, mailing envelopes, resumes, CDs, etc. are all tax deductible.
The cost of online services directly used in job hunting.
If you travel to a job interview by car or plane and YOU pay for it....you can deduct it.
